Interpretation

KWANG-GAE is named after the famous Gwanggaetoh, the 19th King of the Koguryo Dynasty, who regained all the lost territories including the greater part of Manchuria. The diagram represents the expansion and recovery of lost territory. The 39 movements refer to the first two figures of 391 A.D., the year he came to the throne.

Kwang-Gae

The life of Gwanggaeto

King Gwanggaeto (meaning "Expander of Territories") was born in 374 AD and ascended the throne in 391, aged just seventeen, to become the 19th king of the Goguryeo dynasty. He reigned during the period known in Korean history as the Three Kingdoms, for during this time there was constant fighting on the Korean peninsula between the Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje dynasties.

He extended the territory of the Goguryeo far into the Korean peninsula, expanding southward at the expense of the Baekje dynasty, which occupied the territory north of the Han River, and occupied the Manchurian territory east of Liaohe. At his death in 413 (aged only 39), Koguryo ruled everything between Sungari and the Han River. This meant control of more than two-thirds of what is now modern Korea, as well as much of Manchuria. In addition, the rulers of Silla offered the rulers of the Northern Kingdom protection from Japanese raids in 399. Only Baekje continued to resist Goguryeo domination during this period, thus preventing the first unification of the Korean peninsula.

During his reign, King Gwanggaeto conquered 65 towns and about 1400 villages and assisted Silla when it was invaded by the Japanese. In 392 he built nine Buddhist temples in Pyongyang. His achievements are recorded on a monument erected in 414 in southern Manchuria. Some people assume that the first movement of the pattern could signify the expansion and restoration of lost territories, as well as the meaning of the whole pattern.

Interesting fact about this movement

It is said to symbolize a king - a warrior facing an enemy who is surrounded by his army on both sides. He observes the weather, the position of the sun, etc. to see if they are advantageous to his army. He then tears his arms apart in a circular motion, signaling his army to attack.

Pattern is practised by the I. Degree holder and above.
